Johanna Gladys Bowles

Ms. Bowles

Passed peacefully away on October 15th at the University of Alberta Hospital, Edmonton, Johanna (Gladys) Bowles, aged 64 years. Gladys was born on July 19th, 1959, in Burgeo, NL to
parents Wallace and Julia MacDonald. She was raised in Francois, NL, a place very dear to her heart and lived there until she
relocated to Ramea, NL. It was there she welcomed her daughter, best friend, pride and joy Carolyn. They lived in Ramea until 1999 when they moved to Port Au Port East, NL.

Gladys was a very loving, kind-hearted woman who adored her family. She would always light up the room with her free spirit and had a smile for everyone she met. Her passion was cooking, baking and being in the kitchen, any visitors she had were guaranteed to leave with a full stomach and some treats for the road. But, above all, she was a woman of pure strength and determination. She began travelling to Fort McMurray in 2011,
working a camp rotation with SNC and was away from home several months at a time. While there she made friendships, created memories and worked towards a life she
always wanted. She was due to retire this December.

Gladys was predeceased by her parents, Wallace and Julia; parents-in-law Eric and Martha Jane Bowles; Brother Garland; Brother-in-Law Harold; Nephew Kevin and her beloved dog Maggie.

Left with fond and loving memories are her daughter, Carolyn, Sisters, Evelyn (George), Minnie (Jesse), Sharon (Jerry), Elaine (Sid), Beulah (Kevin), Connie (George); Brothers, Wallace (Bonnie), Robert (Diane); Carolyn’s Father, Guy (Barbara); Brother-in-Law Sandy (Irene); Sisters-in-Law Barbara (Thomas), Frances (Michael) and Georgina. Gladys also leaves behind many nieces and nephews, her girl Sara (niece) as well as great nieces and nephews who call her Gammy and her precious dog Mia.

We would like to thank the ICU staff for the amazing care and compassion shown to Gladys and her family throughout her short stay. Thank you to Simply Cremations for your professionalism and kindness shown to us throughout our time of sorrow. A sincere thank you to Civeo a company that she worked for these past five years. The
management and Gladys’ coworkers went above and beyond to show their support to the family during this difficult time, we can never thank you enough. A special thank you to friend Dorothy (Ross) who travelled from Newfoundland to be with Carolyn during this very difficult time. Thank you to her niece/goddaughter Christina (Wayne), and
coworker Randy (Tracy) who travelled to be there with Carolyn and visit Gladys during her short hospital stay. Lastly, a very special thank you to Gladys’ dear friend and
co-worker Ellen, you did more than we could have ever expected and there are not enough words to express how thankful we are, you’re truly an angel.

Mom, I promise no matter how far or wherever you go, I will always be there for you. I know you will always be there for me, and we will never let go of each other. – Carolyn

Cremation has taken place, and there will be a service in Stephenville to follow, along with a service and burial in Francois during the Summer of 2024.

Carolyn, I knew your Mom for a short time here at Surmont. She was such a delight; a kind, open and caring person. I’m so sorry for your loss. Know that things are just not the same here without her. I miss her smiling face and chats in the hallways. With Love.

Carolyn, I’m so so sorry for your loss. Your mother was my childhood babysitter, “Gaggy” as my brother and I called her when we were young and she was a beautiful person. She made us laugh, and knew how to cheer us up when we were sad. I’ll never forget her, and you were everything to her, she will always be with you.

I am so sorry for your loss. I was so happy to see her again. We had a chance to catch up a little when we ran into each other at the Fall Fair. I was looking forward to seeing more of her when she retired in December.
I met her at Surmont 2 in 2011. She was able to make our small group laugh at the many meals we all shared together.
I was shocked to hear of her passing but I know her love for you and her family gives you strength in this difficult time.
She will be missed by us all.

Carolyn,
I am so very sorry for your loss. I worked at Surmont with ConocoPhillips for years before transferring to the Calgary office and your mom was such a bright light for me when I was there. She was always so friendly and would give me a big hug whenever I went back for a visit. She was a big part of the Surmont family, and her bright friendly smile will always be missed.
My heart goes out to you, your family and Gladys’ friends during this difficult time.

We are so very sorry and heartbroken of your beautiful mom’s passing. No matter when or where I ran into her she always had that beautiful smile and would always start up a conversation then the two of us didn’t know when to stop chatting! I think we were trying to out do each other ,which wasn’t hard to do when we both loved to talk. She was always a pleasure to run into whether it would be at Walmart or in parking lot we were happy to see each other.
Just wanted you to know your mom was a special lady even if we weren’t family . Sending our condolences to you and all your families.
