Florent (Gil) Joseph Gilmore

GILMORE.png

Our family is saddened to announce the passing of Florent (Gil) Gilmore. Gil was a friend to many, even strangers, and will be sorely missed by all those that spent any time with him. He will leave a large void for Gail, his wife of 60 years. They grew up together, laughed together, cried together, explored together. It will not be the same without him.

While he will get to join his daughter Keri, who passed long before her time, he will be missed and celebrated and remembered by his sons Darren (Marina) and Michael (Joni). He showed his boys a few things about life and living and just getting stuff done. Thanks Pop!

He loved his grandchildren, Brianna (Grant), Carly (Dallas), Quinn and Clayton and his great-grandchildren, Gabriel and Alyse. He revelled in teasing and laughing with them all. He got excited getting his hands dirty with them, whether it be fixing something in the garage or in the kitchen.

We know he will be missed by many friends and family so we look forward to celebrating his life at 3PM on Thursday, August 22nd at the Sandman Hotel at 901 Pembina Road in Sherwood Park, AB.

There will be stories of his youth on the farm in Radville, Saskatchewan. We will laugh about some antics during his early work days in the construction industry in Edmonton. He loved sports and coaching his kids in Hockey, Baseball and Softball where he made lifelong friends. Our family appreciates your love and support as we remember our husband, Dad, Grandfather, Great-grandfather, Uncle, Brother and friend.

Please forego flowers and if you are inclined, feel free to make a donation in Gil’s name to Covenant Health, who provide palliative care at the Grey Nuns Hospital and where Gil received the most caring of care at a time he most needed it. Our family would also like to thank the wonderful doctors and nurses at the Cross Cancer Centre in Edmonton so donations in Gil’s name are very much appreciated.

Love you Gilly!

George Stephan Martel
September 15, 1933 – August 13, 2024

It is with breaking hearts, and yet secure in the knowledge that we will be together again in life ever-lasting that the family of George Stephan Martel announces that he has gone to live with our Heavenly Father.

George leaves behind his wife, Claire of 35 years; his son, Wayne (Ingrid) Martel and his daughter, Jhena Martel, three grandchildren, Kellen, Allegra, & Rayna Martel, and one sister, Lorraine Smorodin of Watrous, Saskatchewan and numerous nieces and nephews. He also leaves four step-children; Aaron Preston, Robyn (Neil) Oshust, Laurel (Steve) Hawkins, and Cathleen (Glen) Sinclair, and nine step grand-children including his special “Step” Sandrina (Preston).

Awaiting his arrival just inside the gates of Heaven was his large, happy family; his parents, Sebastian and Barbara Martel, and 16 brothers and sisters, who predeceased him. As well as his four-legged Westie buddy, Jake.

George was born in Allen, Saskatchewan and grew up on a farm near Watrous, Saskatchewan; he often recalled happy memories of life on the farm with his family, friends and neighbours and especially the animals.

George began playing baseball as a young man in Saskatchewan, he played for both the Guernsey Junior and Senior Hardball Teams. When he moved to Edmonton, he played for the Jasper Place Clowns, a Spruce Grove Team and then for the Hinton Hi Brights. He would drive out to Hinton to play ball for the weekend and be back in Edmonton to work on Monday.

He has been a long time Atlanta Braves fan, and enjoyed watching Baseball, Hockey and CANADIAN football on TV. He enjoyed attending spring training games in Phoenix over the years. George also enjoyed curling and bowling.

George worked on the family farm in Saskatchewan and for several neighbours until he was 20, then he decided to come to Alberta. He tried Peace River first, but decided Edmonton would be a better choice.

In Edmonton he worked for Armco Drainage and Metal Products where he earned his certificate as a welder, then moved on to get numerous more welding tickets. Many young men apprenticed under him as he shared his knowledge with them.

He was a welder by trade, a farmer, a husband, a father, a step-father, a Grandpa, and a friend, he will be missed beyond measure.

Honouring George’s wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no service.

We ask that you keep George in your hearts and prayers, remembering his happy, and fun-loving spirit.

Her last few years were spent at Rivercrest in Fort Saskatchewan. It was here that she met some wonderful people, continued to make more memories and receive the highest level of care and compassion from the staff. Elsie loved all her family and friends unconditionally, she cherished the time with loved ones, her bright smile and warm embrace will never be forgotten. As per her wishes, a cremation has taken place and a private celebration of life will be held at a later date.
May the road ride to meet you
May the wind be always at your back
May the sun shine warm upon your face
May the rain fall soft upon your fields
Until we meet again
May god hold you in the hollow of his hand.
