William (Bill) Joseph Tipper

Dad.jpg

Bill was born on June 3, 1939, in Castor, Alberta and passed on October 31, 2023, in Edmonton, Alberta.

Bill is survived by his wife Marianne, his children Tim Tipper, Bill Tipper Jr (Roxanne), Heather Watson (Tipper) (Steve), Mike Schurek (Shari) and Chris Schurek (Shanta). Bill will lovingly be remembered by his grandchildren Kristi, Melissa, Matthew, Anthony, Jaedon, Emma, Hannah, Kasey, and Georgia, as well as his great grandchildren Jordyn, Kayla, Madeline, Maya, Jaxton, Kayden, and Zayden. Bill was predeceased by his youngest son Mark Tipper who passed in 1990.

Bill was an adventurous soul who lived across Canada, making homes in Nova Scotia, Yukon, British Columbia, Saskatchewan, and Alberta. Bill never turned down the opportunity to master a new job and worked over the years as pin setter in bowling alley, cab driver, barber, bartender, house painter, equipment operator and project manager. There was nothing that bill couldn’t do once he set his mind to it.

Bill was a generous soul. He was generous with his time, his ability to forgive and his desire to show his love. He deeply believed in a life of service and for decades he dedicated time to the Kiwanis Club of Abbotsford. His time in Kiwanis brought him great joy and lifelong friendships. Bill worked at not holding grudges and often counselled us on the power of forgiveness. He believed that life was just a blink of an eye and there was not enough time to waste any of it on anger. Bill was a loving husband, father, papa, brother, uncle, and friend. He loved all his family and friends deeply and welcomed everyone with a huge smile and warm embrace.

He was the joker of the family, quick witted and had a wonderful sense of humour with a little bit of mischievousness added in. Bill loved a good ‘discussion’ (friendly argument) and loved instigating these to see our reactions. Wherever Bill went he made friends, made people laugh and created lasting memories. His family will miss him forever but know that it’s just a blink of an eye until they see each other again.

A celebration to honour Bill will be held on Friday November 17th , 2023 at Saint Thomas More Catholic Church located at 210 Haddow Close NW, Edmonton, AB at 1:00 pm. There will be a lunch to follow. If desired, donations can be made in Bill’s name to the Alberta Lung Association.

Sharon Anne Gillis

Sharon passed away on October 19, 2023 surrounded by her daughters and favourite child, her son in law Ryan. She had a great sense of humour, which she maintained to her final moments. Mom lived life on her own terms, and often shared her signature
catchphrase DILLIGAF.

Sharon was born in Massachusetts and moved to Nova Scotia after graduation. She later moved to Alberta, and spent several years grandmothering her grandsons and instilling in them a love of sports which stemmed from her passion for baseball. She loved to spend time with her daughters and her friends who were like family. Some of her fondest
memories were camping and playing dice. Those that knew Mom, knew how much she loved babies and how thrilled she was as more grandchildren come along. At the time of her passing she was blessed to have 7 beloved grandchildren.

Sharon said she lived a good life and she wanted everyone to smile up to her final
moments. So if you’re drinking a warm Coors Lite or watching the Blue Jays, cheers Sharon.

Laura Olive Sanborn

SANBORN, Laura Olive (November 3, 1920 – October 20, 2023)

It is with deep sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Laura Olive Sanborn on October 20, 2023, two weeks before her 103rd birthday.

Laura was predeceased by her husband Jack, and son Wayne. She will be deeply missed by her son Greg, and his children Caitlin, Jonathan and Emma (Philip); and her daughter Holly (Miles), and their children Chris (Natasha), Craig (Melissa), and Cory (fiancée Sarah). Laura had five adorable Great-grandchildren (Sam, Ben, Brynlee, Jessie and Madi), who were her pride and joy, and always brought a smile to her face. Laura was born in Rossington, Alberta, but was raised in Manola, Alberta with her three sisters and one brother.

As a young girl, she rode to and from her one room schoolhouse on horseback, and helped out in her parents’ “Red and White” store in her spare time. After finishing school she moved to Edmonton, where she was trained and worked as an x-ray technician in a local clinic. In 1948, she married her husband Jack, and devoted her time to raising her family. In 1981 they decided to make their home in Alberta Beach, where they both made many new friends, and Laura had lived there ever since.

Laura and Jack spent many winters in Indio, California, where Laura loved to golf and spend time with their many friends in the Palm Springs area. She was always a gracious host to kids and grandkids who would escape the Alberta winter to spend time with her and Jack in Indio. Her summers were spent golfing with the ladies at Alberta Beach, gardening, going for walks, and going for boat rides with her grandchildren. She also loved Saturday night cards (with a sip of liqueur), knitting, crosswords, word puzzles, and most of all being outside in the fresh air “people watching”. We will all miss her dearly, but know that she will definitely be watching over us from above!

In lieu of flowers, a donation in Laura’s name to the Alberta Heart and Stroke Foundation would be appreciated.

The family will be holding a private celebration of Laura’s life. If you happen to be sipping a liqueur on a Saturday night, why not raise a glass to Laura.

James Al Windsor

Windsor, James
November 23, 1947-September 25, 2023

James Al (Jim) Windsor, (75), passed away, peacefully in hospice, on September 25th, 2023.

Our Dad, Husband, Grandpa Hobbit, and “Unc.” was a brilliant, kind man and lifelong learner. Throughout his life, he was passionate about whatever he did. His sense of
adventure took him hiking through mountains, hang-gliding, skinny dipping in mountain streams, and repelling off cliffs and bridges. He will be remembered for his love of birds, nature and all living creatures – even the porcupines, as long as they were not eating his trees.

He was one of the hardest working people we knew – shovelling snow for the whole block, looking after family members, writing computer programs, and studying calculus “for fun.” He created miles of trails and lookout spots at his favorite place – otherwise known as, “The Sand Farm.” He could take anything apart and put it back together in the dark, as long as you could hold the flashlight long enough. He had a tremendous sense of humour, making up funny nicknames for loved ones, and using phrases like, “We’re off like a turd of hurdles.” He laughed like a donkey.

Jim is survived by his wife Shirley Windsor and daughters Bobbi (Stefano) Francescut and Cori (Marc) Tremblay, as well as grandchildren Simon, Marcus, Madeline and Phoenix. He is also survived by his sister Judy Windsor, niece Candy Retson, and nephew Robert Calvert. Jim was predeceased by his parents Robert (Bob) Windsor and Emily Rose (Becky) Jorgensen, and his brother John Windsor.

As per his wishes, a small, intimate celebration of his life will take place in the spring of 2024, in his favorite place, surrounded by birds, wildflowers and trees. In lieu of other tributes, a donation can be made to Pilgrims Hospice. He would also love to know that you will feed the birds and think of him.
