We are sad to announce the passing of Mary Louise “Lou” McDougall (nee: Johnson). She lost her short battle with cancer in the early hours of Saturday July 10, 2021 and passed away peacefully at home.
Lou grew up in Maidstone, Saskatchewan; studied in Portland and lived in parts of B.C. Before settling in the Edmonton area.
She was predeceased by her parents, son-in-law Jeffery Houseman and her previous husband Bruce McDougall as well as her brothers-in-law Murray Carson and Keith Colvin. She is survived by her husband and soulmate Marvin Smith, daughter Carolyn Houseman and her children Nick and Avery, her step-son Kirk Smith, his partner Mellisa and their blended family Tyler, Ashley, Avery and Sydni. She will also be missed by her sisters and brother; Marge Colvin, Kay Carson and Rick Johnson (Pam) as well as her many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews and her dear friend Dianne Schmaltz.
Lou had a varied work life as a milkman, salesman, florist, recreation therapist and entrepreneur. She loved “her seniors” and being an avid animal lover could be found entertaining her day program participants with visits from alpacas, donkeys, chicks and other assorted critters. Her time with the pet therapy program saw her taking her pet chicken, Rusty and dog, Tess to visit many seniors in the city.
Other loves in her life were her beautiful gardens, setting up a community garden, being a part of the garden club and sharing both her knowledge and her perennials with others. Lou loved to travel and explore different cultures and has made many friends all over the world. Sewing was another passion, especially making outfits for all the young people in her life and teaching others the craft. She was very involved in her church and known be involved with the congregation in fund raising activities such as the trail days concession, plant/Christmas centrepieces and bake sales. Lou was also an avid bird watcher and could often be found in local ditches and swamps to get a closer look when something caught her eye. After she retired she could be found sitting on the deck and reading a book.
Gregarious in life, she always knew her neighbours and was known to plan a party or two. All of these activities underscore the lessons her daughter says she learned from her mom – the importance of building and maintaining community and following one’s passions.
In lieu of flowers please make a donation to the charity of your choice in Lou’s name.
She will be missed!!!
There will be a celebration of life “Lou out” on September 04, 2021 at 134, 21431 Township Road 522 (Midway Estates) between 1:00 and 4:00 pm.
