LATONAS
Brian Frederick
March 10, 1951 – Sept. 10, 2021

Cast your eyes on the ocean
Cast your soul to the sea
When the dark night seems endless
Please remember me….

(Dante’s Prayer, L. McKennit)

With broken hearts, the family of Brian Latonas announces his passing on September 10, 2021.
Brian has been described, by those who knew him, as an intelligent, kind and thoughtful man. He was devoted to his wife of 38 years (Wilma Haas) and to his proudest legacy, his children Sarah and Carl (Latonas).

Brian was born in Edson, grew up in Fort Frances, Ontario and spent most of his adult life in Edmonton. Brian was devoted to his career as a chartered psychologist providing counseling and related support services to families and individuals. Working with children was his particular strength and passion. His strong ethical and caring value system defined him in both his profession and his family life.

Brian loved the outdoors: Boating, hiking, camping and nature photography were all pursued with enthusiasm. He shared these interests (and many amusing stories of past adventures) with his family, both at the family cabin on Rainy Lake in NW Ontario and across Canada. As his children grew, Brian’s interests expanded to include their activities too, specifically ice sports, soccer and cycling in the Edmonton River Valley. That his role in these activities was often that of driver, sports photographer and #1 booster was fine with him. He just loved being there for and with his kids.

Brian and Wilma retired together in 2011 and spent the next 10 years fine-tuning their skills in ballroom and other forms of social dance and traveling. (Exploring his paternal roots in Lithuania was a particular travel highlight.) Too, retirement gave Brian the opportunity to more fully engage in his long-standing interests and hobbies (music and coin and stamp collecting principle among them).

In addition to his wife and children, Brian was survived by his mother (Kathleen) who sadly passed away on September 15th, just five days after Brian’s death. He is survived by his brother Graham (Sylvia) of Calgary, cousins Bob and John Jacobs and Christine (Eric) Wilson of Vancouver, and all of their families. He was preceded by his father (Peter). Brian always been grateful for the warm welcome he received and enjoyed from the extended Haas family. Brian will be dearly missed.

As per his wishes, Brian’s bodily remains have been cremated. A Celebration of Life and Interment of his ashes will take place in Edmonton at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alberta Cancer Foundation (https://www.albertacancer.ca/donate/) or a charity meaningful to the donor.

The Latonas Family would like to thank Dr. Gushaty and the staff at the Cross Cancer Institute and the Grey Nuns Palliative Care Unit for the care and compassion shown to Brian during his illness.

Diana Elizabeth Morse

DMorseObitPhoto1200.jpg

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Diana Elizabeth Morse of Hay Lakes, Alberta on September 3rd, 2021.

Diana faced her cancer as she faced life, with a determination and courage that was an inspiration to her friends and family. Defiant and stubbornly making it to the age of 61, she pushed expectations and lengthened averages for those who come next. She was always looking out for others, and chose a profession which enabled her devotion, proudly serving numerous communities in Alberta as a member of AMA. She felt particularly blessed and fulfilled to serve the Camrose community as an insurance agent, manager, and as a friend.

She is survived by her sons, her family, all those whose lives she touched, all who love her and all who were lucky enough to be part of her life. She leaves her joy, her grandchildren: Anabelle, Sadie and Russell. Her life mattered, her voice is heard, she will never be forgotten.

In lieu of a scheduled event, Diana would request you gather with friends and family, enjoy life, share stories and above all, laugh. If you wish to send flowers, Diana would prefer a donation be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of your choice.

Margaret Marie Jackson

Marge.jpg

Margaret (Marge) Marie Jackson passed away at the age of 86 years old in the early morning of August 28, 2021. Marge will be greatly missed by all who knew her, especially her sons: Robert (Lorraine) and Thomas; grandchildren: Janet (Adam) Sommerfeld, Charles, David (Lany), Alexandra (Parker) Volden, Rachael, Tyler (Julianne), Jesse (Mariah), Maggie, Jeri, and Bobby; and great grandchildren: Katerina, Amelie, William, Ava, and Benjamin. She was predeceased by : her son, Richard, parents, and siblings.
Marge was born in Madison, Missouri on July 15, 1935. She moved with her family to Whitecourt, Alberta in 1970 and later moved to the Goose Lake area where she homesteaded and built her home. Marge was talented and built her own cupboards, window frames, furniture, and other carpentry projects such as her greenhouse. A resilient, hardworking pioneer woman, she loved to garden and canned many jars of vegetables and fruit, which she shared with the family. She loved bright colours and enjoyed the many flowers inside and outside her home.
She was very comfortable living alone and could not understand why people thought she should live closer to town. Her strength came from being out in nature and she found it peaceful and serene to live in the country. Her favorite bird to watch was the owl.
A lively spirit, she was quick with her wit and had great sense of humour. She enjoyed sharing family stories with her grandchildren and with her southern accent, would recount her many life experiences living in Missouri. They will always remember her as someone who loved them with all her heart.
A caring, devoted mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, Marge will be missed for her warm smile and interesting conversations. She was one-of-a-kind lady and as someone who knew her shared, “they don’t make them like that anymore”.
Marge led a simple and humble life. Her wish was not to hold any formal ceremony at the end of her life. The Jackson family would like to express our sincere thanks for the condolences we have received during our time of bereavement.

Brent Norman Piwowar

Simply-Cremations-Obit-Photo.jpg

With deep sadness, we announce the passing of our beloved Dad and Papa, Brent Norman Piwowar. Brent passed away on August 16, 2021 at the age of 65, at his home in Spruce Grove, Alberta, surrounded by his children. Just like he dealt with all experiences in life, Brent managed his cancer with courage and strength and despite the pain, he remained strong until the end.

Brent was born on July 22, 1956 in Gainsborough, Saskatchewan to Bette and Tony Piwowar. He always spoke fondly of growing up in the north and cherished the lifelong friendships he made while in Fort Smith, Hay River and Pine Point. After high school, he met Linda, and they had four children. While they relocated south to Spruce Grove in 1989, Brent still frequented the north with Taurus Contractors, his construction business. Known for his tireless work ethic and a spirit of determination, his contributions to the north are reflected in countless buildings and towers throughout the NWT and Nunavut.

Brent was warm, caring and had a heart of gold. You could find him every morning down at the coffee shop where he enjoyed reading the paper and loved to start up conversation with those around him. His warm smile and friendly personality could instantly put you at ease. His greatest joy was his children and grandchildren and he passed on his entrepreneurial nature spending weekends bringing bottles into the bottle depot with his grandchildren. In addition to the north, he enjoyed spending time at his Grandparents’ farm in Kinsella, AB.

Left to cherish his memory are his Children Terry; Brent (Ali), Joanie (Rick), Holly (Devin); his grandchildren, Ethan, Noah, Chloe, Bailey, Mason and Nash. He will be missed by numerous other relatives and friends. Brent was preceded in his death by his parents and younger sister, Corinne Piwowar.

Cremation has taken place on August 20th and a Celebration of Brent’s Life will be held on Thursday, August 26, 2021, at 2:00 PM at the Elks Hall, 400 Diamond Avenue, Spruce Grove, AB.

Special thanks to Catherine from Westview Health for her compassion and excellent care of Dad during his final days at home. We would also like to thank Dr. Castillo and the staff at the CIPAG Clinic in Tijuana. In lieu of flowers, the family asks you to consider making a blood donation at your local blood center in honour of Brent.

Gage Ashton Thibault-Bombay

September 20th, 1999 – August 17th, 2021

In loving memory of Gage Thibault-Bombay.
Gage was born September 20th, 1999 in Slake Lake, AB to Terry & Charity Bombay.
Gage tragically passed away in Edmonton, AB on August 17th, 2021.
He was very loved and cherished by his family.
Survived by his parents Charity & Terry Bombay, Brother Jeremi Thibault-Bombay (Shayla Roufosse), Grandparents Jo-Ann & Paul Soares, Ally & Arman Bombay, as well as aunts and uncles Jason Thibault (Tracy Chamzuk-Thibault) ,Tracy Thibault (Robert Vogel), Tammy Bombay and cousins Rebecca, Kayla, Tierra, Lexus, Joesph, Katie.
Gage was the most kindhearted, funny, loving, generous, young man you would ever meet. Even from a young age he was always trying to make people smile, always held doors open for people, and gave whatever he could to make others happy. He loved his family purely and unconditionally as they did him.
He enjoyed plenty of summer days outdoors by Slave Lake Beach just soaking up the sun and playing in the water. He loved boating and seadooing, knee boarding, tubing, pretty much anything he could do in or on the water. He also loved BMX’s and biking.
He loved to laugh and could brighten a room just by walking in and we know he is flying in the clouds and stars with his papa by his side.
Gage was taken much too soon. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who loved him and knew the kind soul he truly was inside.

“To lose someone so special
is really hard to bear
it hardly seems believable
that you’re no longer there

You left us far too early
before your time, it seems
and now you’ll never have the chance
to fulfill all those dreams

However hard it is though
we’ll take comfort in the thought
of all the memories we have
and the happiness you’ve brought

You always lived life to the fullest
but ours won’t be the same
until the day when we can see
your smiling face again”

A bit more about this fella…
Jack was born on 23 March 1930 on the family homestead near St Walburg, Saskatchewan, and was nicknamed Jack after his brother Stewart’s imaginary friend. As a youngster, he worked on the family farms in Saskatchewan and in Salmon Arm, BC.
Jack loved building and fixing things. After a short post-WWII Navy service in Halifax, he settled in Edmonton where he transitioned from typewriter repairman to automotive mechanic (and service station owner) to oilfield service technician. In the 1980s, he started building and repairing oilpatch items, leading to the founding of Panama Enterprises, initially in his home and eventually into larger facilities in West Edmonton. Jack became “Panama Jack”, known across the oilpatch for his signature Tilley hat and the outstanding windsocks Panama produced and delivered around the globe.
Jack was a real character, blessed with a gift of the gab, and always a joke or three (many rather risqué and colorful, but always delivered with a naughty wink and a smile). He was a big-hearted true giver and donated both time and money to many charities and people, with a special connection to the congregation at Trinity United Church. He cared about people, and was a true friend to so many.
Jack fostered and nurtured his family and their connections to kin across Western Canada. He was proud of his children and in his own words… “it’s amazing to go from horse and buggy to what we have today… [the kids] are all doing great… feels good to see that… in hind sight things worked out pretty good.”
Jack will live on in so many memories he created, and in so many lives he touched.
