Carolyn McGarvey (Nee Pearase)
November 11, 1955 to December 31, 2020

It is with great sadness our family announces the passing of Carolyn Joan McGarvey. She was 65 years young. Born in Edmonton, Alberta, Carolyn was a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend to many. She passed away peacefully at St. Joseph’s Auxiliary Hospital after a difficult battle with cancer that she fought with courage and grace.

Dedicated, Strong and Brave, Carolyn worked as a nurse for over 10 years, caring greatly for her patients, her co-workers, and the work she did.

Carolyn is survived by her four children Sean (Amy), Ben (Laura), Alana (Nathan), and Aaron (Taryn); four grandchildren Jacob and Evan (Sean and Amy), Jordan and Micah (Alana and Nathan); Brother Neil; sister-in-law Linda; niece Erin; nephew Scott; as well as many beloved friends. Carolyn was predeceased by her parents Buck and Georgina, and son Bryan.

The family would like to thank the Doctors and Palliative Care Team for their excellent support, as well as a special thank you to Kate and Bruce for their compassionate and loving care.

A celebration of life will be held later due to current Pandemic restrictions. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.

MARGARET ANNE LONG
1928 – 2021

Margaret Long died on January 11, 2021 at the University of Alberta Hospital following a hip fracture. She was 92 years old.

Margaret was born Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1928. She grew up in Abbey Saskatchewan, the second youngest of a family of four. As an adult she moved to Winnipeg and worked for General Theatre and Sound as the office manager. Her relatives were occasionally treated to free movies, a perk of her job. She spent the majority of her life in Winnipeg. Due to declining health she moved to Edmonton during her final years to be closer to her niece and sister Betty.

Margaret was a people person and loved to socialize. She was the family historian. She was one of the original members of PEO Chapter “O” established in 1956 and held a variety of positions in this philanthropic organization for women. She remained a member until her death. Margaret had numerous friends in Winnipeg. She enjoyed crosswords and word search puzzles.

Margaret was predeceased by her brother Bill Long and sister Ruth Long. She is survived by her sister Betty Rankin of Edmonton and her sister-in-law Marguerite Long of Calgary. She is also survived by her niece, Marianne Rankin and her nephews Melville Rankin, Brent, Bob, Doug and Craig Long.

Margaret’s family is grateful for Margaret’s close friend Gail Reid of Winnipeg. Gail was tremendously supportive and gave extensive assistance to Margaret, particularly during Margaret’s last years in Winnipeg . We would like to acknowledge the help received from AHS Homecare and the staff at Ashbourne. Ashbourne staff went above and beyond in their care for Margaret. And finally we are grateful for the care she received at the University of Alberta Hospital in her last days.

An Angel took our Mother by the hand and told her that a place in Heaven was ready for her.
Jean (Ostafichuk) White was born on August 3, 1931 in Sheho, Saskatchewan. She is predeceased by her husband Ronald Addison White of 53 years. Ron and Jean resided in Yorkton, SK since 1975. Upon Ron’s death in 2008, Jean moved to Sherwood Park, AB. She then moved to Lifestyle Options Riverbend in Edmonton during 2018. Jean had suffered from heart issues, diabetes, as well as dementia for the past ten years. As her health began to deteriorate, her last days were spent at Hardisty Nursing Home in Edmonton, AB.

Jean is survived by four of her children: Roland White (recently deceased), Wayne (Jacquie) White, Curtis (Sharla) White, and Janice (Larry) Yausie, and seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Although Mom’s health was failing, it was Covid, in the end that took her life. She will be sadly missed. She always took care of her family, loved her Ukrainian heritage, as well as loved to laugh. Rest in peace Mom we will see you again someday.

A cremation has taken place. There will be a Celebration of her Life at a future date in Regina, SK.

Albert White was born on March 11th, 1930 in Sioux Lookout, Ontario. The family relocated to Elphinstone Manitoba where he attended the Elphinstone School. He was the eldest of seven children. In 1952 Albert married Margaret Topolinski from Neepawa where they settled for the next 6 years. On or about 1950 Albert started his working career on the Railroad with the B&B Gang building bridges.
He did this for the first 10 years before relocating the family to CFB Shilo where he joined the Inter-City Gas Company. After 8 years in Shilo the family again relocated to Virden where Albert started his own Plumbing and Heating Business for approximately 6 years. It was at that point the family left Manitoba to settle in Edmonton Alberta where he continued to work in the Plumbing industry until his formal retirement in around 2000.
It is with great sadness that the family of Albert announces his peaceful passing on January 9th, 2021 at the age of 90. Albert’s death is preceded by the untimely passing of his daughter Linda Dinney on January 18th, 2020.
He will be forever missed by Margaret, his surviving wife of 68 years and their three children; Barbara White, Laurie (Jim) Parkinson and Larry (Carrie) White. In addition his five grandchildren, Stacey Dinney, Sarah (Kerry) Preece, Matthew (Megan) White, Wesley White, Jennifer White and seven great grandchildren.
Albert is also survived by his six brothers and sisters; Leslie (Lillian) White, Lucy Robinson, Shirley (Bob) Fischer, Deanna Lessard, Bud (May) Bercier and Dennis (Brenda) Bercier and numerous nieces and nephews.
Albert was a kind and generous man who loved the outdoors including fishing, hunting, and farming. He was always willing and available to help friends and family. He loved music, singing, playing guitar, banjo and violin with great enthusiasm. Rest in peace Albert, we will miss you always and love you very much.

Richard Wayne Giles
September 17, 1979 – December 11, 2020
Sadly, Richard passed away December 11, 2020 at the University Hospital in Edmonton, Alberta from the Covid – 19 virus.
He leaves to remember him, his children: Brandon Patrick Burneau, Nathan Wayne Giles,
Daniel Joseph Giles, and their mother Margaret Burneau.
Brothers William and Donald Giles.
Also, friends and family members throughout, Alberta, British Columbia and Manitoba.
Richard was born in Swan Lake, Manitoba and moved to Alberta as a young child. Most of his growing up years was spent living on a farm southwest of Edmonton. It is here that he enjoyed spending time with his brothers building tree houses, campfires, wiener and marshmallow roasts, sleep outs under the stars, learning to row a boat down at the farm dugout, raising and caring for farm animals, as well as many dogs and cats.
Richard spent several years in the Air Cadets which he enjoyed.
He attended Calmar School, he was a good student, and learning always came easy to him. He enjoyed music, writing, drawing, team sports, he especially loved playing basketball.
Lastly, his beloved children, Brandon 17 – Nathan 15 – Daniel 7 – Richard loved his boys and enjoyed spending time with them. He thought his boys his greatest achievement and their mother, his best friend.
Rest in Peace dear dad, son, brother and friend, always loved, forever missed.

Herbert LaRoche (Hoby)
August 3, 1932 – December 21, 2020

It is with sadness that the family announces the passing of Hoby at the age of 88 years.

He will be lovingly remembered by his children Helen (Rick), Murray, Kelly (Sandy), Kent (Julieann), Donna, many grandchildren, great grandchildren, sisters, brother and numerous nieces and nephews.

Hoby was predeceased by his wife Margaret and his parents Raymond and Margaret.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date at Bethania Lutheran Church at Northern Light.

Esther was born on February 21,1933 in a log home on the family farm near Thorsby Alberta to August and Lydia Kunkel. She was the youngest of 3 children. Esther started school at 5½ as she was anxious to learn. At 13 Esther moved into Thorsby to be closer to school. To pay for her room and board she cooked, cleaned and did childcare. Her love for classical music began when she boarded at the school superintendent’s home. After high school Esther worked at Hoffman’s Hardware in Thorsby while taking courses to gain enough credits to enter University. In 1952 Esther moved to Edmonton and received her fast tracked Teaching Certificate. After spending a year teaching at Strawberry School, a remote country school, Esther returned to Edmonton. In 1953 she married Gerhard Guenther and in their 9 years together they had 4 children; Barbara, Robert, Walter and Alfred.
Esther had a passion for gardening, bird watching, traveling and music. Not only was she a busy hostess but she could strike up conversations with strangers that soon became friends. Once her children attended school Esther substituted as a teacher for 10 years until she began working full time at AGT. She was very active in her faith communities throughout the years.
In 1981 Esther married Wally Kunkel and moved to High Level. They spent much time traveling and enjoying the North Country and its people. She also began substitute teaching again. In High Level she maintained a large flower garden with berry bushes where birds were always welcome.
In her later years Esther moved into Edmonton to spend time with her children and grandchildren. She loved being close to her family.
Esther was predeceased by her husband Wally Kunkel, her father August Kunkel, her mother Lydia Kunkel, her brother John and her brother in law Ted Book. She is survived by her 4 children; Barbara (O.J.) Zerbin, Robert (Karen) Guenther, Walter (Cindy) Guenther, Alfred Guenther, her sister Leah Book and her sister in law Elizabeth Kunkel. Esther is survived by 11 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. A celebration of life will be held later in spring.

Jim passed away peacefully at home on Jan 7, 2021 at the age of 71 surrounded by loved ones.
Jim was born in Medicine Hat. He spent most of his early years there, as well as in Ralston and Churchill. In 1971, he moved to Edmonton to pursue a career as a Medical Laboratory Technologist. Jim eventually became the lab manager at the Misericordia Hospital where he worked for over 37 years. He often commented on how much he enjoyed the work and his co-workers.
Jim had many skills and interests. He was a talented renovator and handyman, and over the years he enjoyed sailing, travelling, photography and gardening.
Jim was kind and generous. Wherever he went, he was well-liked. A loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and the best of friends. Known for his humour, and for taking lots of wonderful photographs, friends, and family will cherish the laughs and the love that Jim shared with them so often.
Jim is survived by his loving wife Cheryl, his sons Stephen (Julianne) and Kevin (Kayla), his step-daughter Sarah (Darren), his beloved grandchildren – Dylan, Jake, Tane, Emma and Sadie, his sister Marg, brother John, and numerous nieces and nephews. Jim was predeceased by his brother Allan.
Due to circumstances, there will be no immediate service or memorial.
Memorial donations can be made to the Brain Tumour Foundation of Canada.

It is with infinite sadness that the family of John Millard announces his sudden passing on January 4, 2021.

He is survived by his son Jarrod Millard; his siblings, Mike (Kathy) Millard, Mary (Terry) Drader, Teresa (Ray) MacNeil and Jim (Noreen) Millard. He also leaves numerous nieces and nephews. His passing will leave a huge hole in the hearts of his roommate Neil Zeller and many other dear friends.

John was predeceased by his parents Isaiah (Zic) and June Millard, his sister Patricia and his brother Pete.

John was a masterful joke teller and delighted in sharing his stories with others. He was a charming, funny, caring man who proved time and again that chivalry is not dead. He was a dedicated fire fighter and retired as a captain with the Edmonton Fire Department.

He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

Cremation has taken place. An appropriate celebration of John’s life will be held at a later date to be determined.
