It is with heavy hearts that the family of Emilie Leopold must sadly announce her passing on February 1st, 2025, at the age of 95, following a brief illness.
Emilie leaves behind her son & daughter-in-law Chris & Cindie, and her daughter-in-law Eileen. Their love for her will only grow stronger with her absence.
She will also be dearly missed by her extended family and friends in Burgenland, Austria, as well as her friends in Alberta and Quebec.
Emilie is predeceased by her son Gerhard, her brother & sister-in-law Alfred & Magdalene Schreiner, her sister & brother-in-law Henriette & Arnold Bartl, and her ex-husband Paul Leopold.
Emilie was born and grew up in Burgenland, Austria and initially moved to Montreal, Quebec at the age of 27 with her then-husband and their first son. As was the case for all immigrants, at that time, her new life in Canada was based on hard work and many sacrifices along the way. Through all those early years, her main focus was always centered around being the best mom she could be for her two boys, Gerhard & Chris, and making sure they grew up to become adults she could be proud of.
During her life, she experienced a few major personal health crises yet always managed to recover. With each recovery, she thanked the Lord for giving her the chance to continue her life again and often said, with some levity, “He doesn’t want me yet.” or, “He only takes the good ones.”
Many years later, as a senior citizen, she moved to Edmonton, Alberta at the age of 76 to be near her two sons once more. She was happy to have her small family together again.
Emilie lived with Alzheimer’s disease during the last six years of her life. As such, Chris & Cindie sincerely extend their heartfelt thanks to those that provided ongoing care during these final years in order to diligently maintain her usual quality of life, in particular the following: Dr. Joris Butzelaar and the staff at the Allin Clinic (family medicine), Dr. Karen Leung and the staff at the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital (geriatric medicine). As well, a very big thank you goes to Homecare Case Manager Danielle Lavallee and the AHS Homecare team, who supported Emilie on a daily basis.
Finally, Chris & Cindie also send sincere thanks to the medical team in Unit 18 at the Sturgeon Community Hospital who cared for Emilie during her final days.
A private gathering has already taken place.
Donations can be made in Emilie’s name to the Alzheimer Society of Canada.
Dear Chris and Cindy,
It is always hard to loose a beloved person, no matter how old they have become. Our sincere condolence to the loss of your mother.

Dear Mili, you were a dear mother-in-law, and friend. I always enjoyed how we found each other’s hearts, in the midst of pain, celebration, joy, loss. You are dearly with me.
Dear Chris and Cindie, my heart goes out to you at the loss of your mother and mother-in-law. She was so dearly loved and cared for by you two. Such a shining example of love in form. Thank you, in love.
I met Mrs Leopold sometime in the early 90s after Chris and I had become friends. I was at her home a few times with Chris and she was always a lovely and kind person. One time Eric was with me, he was probably four or five years old at the time. Chris left us for a while and Mrs. Leopold spent about a half hour following Eric around her apartment and smiling and laughing while he rearranged everything that was small enough for him to move or lift. They had a wonderful conversation about all sorts of things that I couldn’t follow. I remember another time when Chris and his Mom were at our house. They had spent the day driving around doing errands and ended up at our house. She was so happy to be spending the day with Chris and to be meeting his friends. She was a wonderful person. I will always remember her long conversation with Eric while he fixed up all her stuff. Debra and I remember the nice dinner we had in Edmonton with Chris and Cindie and Mrs Leopold after she had moved there. She told me then, through her stories, how proud she was of Chris and Gerhard.

Dear Chris
I was so upset to hear about the loss of your mom
Emilie was a wonderful part of our family for well over15 years, she was a very special person who was loved very much.
My sincere condolences to you and your family.
Thinking of you both Cindie and Chris sorry for your loss.
Great comfort to know that one day we will meet our loved ones as the bible tells us in Rev 21:3-4 With that I heard a loud voice from the throne say: “Look! The tent of God is with mankind, and he will reside with them, and they will be his people. And God himself will be with them. And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry for the former things have passed away.
To Chris and Cindie,

Unser aufrichtiges Beileid senden wir an Cindy und Chris. Unsere Gedanken sind bei euch.
Hi Chris and Cindie,
We are very sorry for your loss. Our deepest sympathies and thoughts are with you.
Please take care.
I did Emily hair for some time and she would love to talk about her two sons. She loved them very much. She always said
“My sons are very good to me” and I would say” Yes Emely, you have good sons and I know they love you so much. We will miss you Emily rest in peace.
We all remember Emilie as a very sweet, lovely and joyful woman. When she was at our home in Montreal, she joined the 4 kiddies of ours in singing along with their new karaoke machine. It was so much fun! Seeing her in Edmonton for dinner few times was lovey too.
Emilie was a woman we will never forget for leaving us the joy she gave. May she rest in peace now. God bless her.
