Following a lengthy battle with dementia, Iris Annie Alice Pawliuk (nee Tkachuk) of Edmonton, Alberta passed away on Wednesday, November 29, 2023 at the age of 88 years.
Iris will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 69 years, Harry; son Robert (Susanne); grandsons Zachary (Rebecca) and Joshua; siblings Orest and Linda (Roger), sister-in-law Olga; brother-in-law Richard (Marie); as well as numerous relatives and friends.
Iris was predeceased by her parents William and Rachel, siblings John and Sophie (Bob) and sister-in law Ina.
Born and raised in the Andrew, Alberta area, Iris grew up on the farm and then later in Andrew, where she met her lifelong partner Harry; they were married in 1954. Iris and Harry lived in Andrew until 1960 when they moved to Edmonton, and Iris worked at Pacific Western Airlines until the arrival of their son, Robert, in 1966. Iris and Harry started up a distributorship company in 1977, which Iris ran until she was joined by Harry after his retirement from teaching.
Iris excelled as a homemaker, baker, cook and crafter when Rob was young, but she was an especially devoted grandmother (Baba) to her two grandsons, watching them from the sidelines of all their sports and traveling around Alberta for their various championship events. She also enjoyed time with family out at the lake where there was no shortage of feasting, fishing and gardening. Iris (and Harry) enjoyed travelling with her sister Sophie (Bob) hunting for gemstones across the western United States in their
retirement. She also cherished spending time with the “movie gang” going to movies, dinner and travelling on cruises.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
The family wishes to send a special thank you to the staff at the Devonshire Care Centre and Rutherford Heights Retirement Residence for their care and compassion.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Alzheimer Society of Alberta and Northwest Territories.
