It is with heartfelt sadness we announce the passing of our loving mom Brenda Hickey, on Sunday, August 9, 2026 in Edmonton, Alberta.
Born in North Sydney on June 15, 1952, Brenda was the daughter of the late Walter and Joan (Gallop) Tattrie. She was a former member of St. John the Baptist Anglican Church and the Northside Artist Association. Mom had several jobs in her early life but retired from Marine Atlantic.
She will be greatly missed by her two sons Sean, Jasper, AB and Michael (Amanda), Sherwood Park, AB, her two grandchildren Liam and Branna; her sister Barb McIntyre (Lorne), Florence, her brother Paul Tattrie, Calgary. She will be remembered by her relatives and friends in Cape Breton and Alberta.
Besides her parents she was predeceased by her husband Gordie, her step-father Ray Tattrie and her precious fur baby Sophie.
There really are no words that can prepare you for losing your mom. She was the person who was always there – the one you could call, the one who cared, the one who worried, and the one who loved us no matter what. Her love was something we could always count on and knowing she was there made life feel a little safer and a little easier. Mom was an incredibly strong woman. Throughout her life, she faced challenges that would have broken many people, but she always found the strength to keep going. She was a two-time cancer survivor and her courage, determination and resilience were an inspiration to everyone who knew her. She fought through those battles with a strength that was uniquely Mom. She never let those difficult times define her; instead, she continued to live, love, laugh and put her family first.
Mom loved her family deeply. Her boys Sean and Michael, meant the world to her, but becoming a grandmother brought a whole new kind of love into her life. Her grandchildren Liam and Branna were her pride and joy. Mom loved watching Liam play hockey and ball hockey. She was so proud sitting in the stands, watching him compete, cheering him on, and celebrating every goal, every save, every win and even the tough games. She loved watching Branna play soccer just as much. There was nothing better to her than being there watching her grandchildren do what they loved and being able to share those moments with them. Those memories are going to be some of the most precious ones we have.
As much as our hearts hurt knowing Mom is no longer here, we are thankful for the years, the memories, the laughter, the conversations and all the little moments that we may not have realized at the time would one day mean so much.
We will miss her voice. We will miss her hugs. We will miss hearing her stories. We will miss knowing she is just a phone call away. And we will miss seeing her sitting in the stands, watching the people she loved most.
But mom’s love doesn’t end here. It stays with us – in her sons, in her grandchildren and in every memory she left behind. Every hockey rink, every ball hockey floor, every soccer field and every family gathering will remind us of her. And when life gets difficult, we will remember the strength she showed us and the battles she fought. We will carry that strength with us.
Mom, you fought so hard, you gave so much and you loved us with everything you had. We could not be more proud to call you our mom. We weren’t ready to say good-bye, and we never could have been.
We love you, Mom…we always will.
Rest peacefully. You fought your battles, you gave us a lifetime of memories and now you can finally rest.

A celebration of life will take place on Thursday August 20, 2026 at 2pm till 4pm. Location is at Simply Cremations 5224 99 Street NW, Edmonton Alberta.
A gathering to celebrate her life will be held in Edmonton with a service to be held in North Sydney sometime in September under the care and direction of W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney.
Brenda was the best neighbor I had living right next door to me. We had many great talks. Her fur baby Sophie, was a sweet heart. Always gave her a bunch of belly rubs & good hugs. Brenda was an amazing woman, very kind, caring, and a great listener. She will be greatly missed! RIP Brenda .

I met Brenda over a year ago when she
Moved into the condo I live in. I met her as my love of animals and her little dog Sophie would bark at me and wag her tail when she seen me. I went and introduced myself and we always chatted and had a few laughs. I will miss her as she always had a big smile.
I met Brenda a year and half ago when I moved into my condo. We hit it off right away. We were both from N.S. and both widows. Same age, and we each had a little dog. We both love going shopping and out for happy hour. Her coming to my place or me going to her place. She was like a sister to me. She loved to talk about her grandkids, one in hockey and one in soccer. I still can’t believe she gone. I will sure miss her every day. It is not every day we can meet someone like her, but I am so glad I did. Rest easy my friend.
