Carole Diana (Oliphant) Cooney

With sadness, the family of Carole Cooney announces her passing in Edmonton, Alberta on July 19, 2026 at the age of 82.

Carole is survived by her son Dale (April); granddaughters, Emily (Nick), and Kaylyn (Joe) and great-granddaughter Maeve; her son, Kirby; granddaughters, Taylor, and Casey; and daughter in law Leah. She will also be missed by her brother, Ross Oliphant (Linda); sister, Karen Elson (Ron); brothers-in-law, Gerry Cooney, Doug Cooney (Linda); sister-in-law, Marion Lee; and numerous nieces and nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her parents and by her husband Clare in 2022.

Carole was born on October 16, 1943, in Elrose, Saskatchewan, the oldest daughter of Freeman and Esther Oliphant. She attended school in Hughton and Elrose. While in school, and until her marriage, she worked at the telephone office in Hughton. Carole married Clare Cooney on November 4, 1961, and together they farmed on the Cooney homestead until 1994. After living the first years of their marriage in Hughton, in 1974 they moved into a new house in Elrose where they lived until 2014 when they moved to Rosetown. In 2023 Carole moved to Edmonton to be closer to family.

Carole loved spending time with friends and family. The coffee pot was always on, friends often gathered around the kitchen table, and Christmas wasn’t Christmas unless the house was full and a large group was gathered around the table.

Carole was an avid crafter who always had a project on the go. She created many beautiful needle point pictures, knitted and crocheted hats, doilies, afghans, and many, many dishcloths and scrubbies!

She loved to play cards and games, often gathering with groups, large and small, to play Rummy, Bridge, Cribbage, Dominos or the like. When they visited, she often had a new game of rummy to share with the family. Carole knew all the rules, didn’t let anyone get away with anything, and always reminded you when it was your turn to play!

In Elrose, Carole was active in the community volunteering in the Uniplex kitchen, working on the history book and homecoming committees, coordinating Candy Striper volunteers, and cooking or baking when called upon for community events. She curled for many years, was a member of the Eastern Star and other service organizations, and enjoyed travelling and participating with Clare in Masonic and Shrine events.

Carole loved to be on the go, and a day trip or longer vacation was even better if she found a place to shop! She and Clare had many winter trips to Arizona, Texas and Vancouver Island first with their trailer and later renting accommodation. Travels also took them to Germany and on an Alaskan cruise. They made many friends and had great times on their travels.

The family would like to extend thanks to the staff at the Canterbury Foundation and the Good Samaritan Society of Edmonton’s Dr. Gerald Zetter Center for the care provided to her in the last years of her life.

At Carole’s request, no funeral service will be held.
