“One day at a time”
August 13, 1931 – May 18, 2025
Hilda Kucy (nee:Gatzke), 93, of Edmonton, Alberta, passed away peacefully on May 18, 2025 after a long and fulfilling life.

Hilda felt “very blessed with great family and friends”, and her independent spirit led her on various journeys to visit them. Her sense of humor and quick wit resulted in many giggles and surprised faces from those who experienced it.

Hilda is remembered for her vibrant spirit, creativity and photogenic opportunities. She was featured on the front page of the Edmonton Journal when a photographer snapped a photo of her jumping over a puddle, capturing Hilda’s spontaneity and openness to trying new things.

She was a terrific cook and took every opportunity to make delicious homemade meals and desserts. In her spare time she could often be seen reading the Edmonton Journal, sewing, gardening, canning and cooking, engaging in home improvement projects or enjoying some “retail therapy”. She loved to learn, took classes, travelled abroad, and collected boxes of family photos.

Hilda was also proud of her rich career, and she had a strong work ethic. She worked in a variety of positions, including the House of Hanratty Catering, various government support positions, and Field Owen Law for many years.

Hilda was born on August 13, 1931, in Belbutte, Saskatchewan. She was the first-born child of her parents, Marie Gatzke (nee: Sellent) and Reinhard Gatzke.

Hilda was married to Joseph Michael Kucy (d. 1982) for 26 years. Together they had two daughters, Sharyn Kucy (Michael Lupart), and Renee Jurgens (Don). Hilda was so proud of her six grandchildren: Evan Fair (Angie Farquharson), Zac Fair, Luke Fair (Natalie Goulet); Joshua Jurgens, Jessie Jurgens (Jesse Letendre), Lisa Szabo (Robbie), and her great-grandson George Szabo.

Later in life Hilda and Dennis Gabriel (d. 2002) shared several happy years together in Penticton, BC.

Hilda is survived by her siblings, Trudy Von Bieker, Walter Gatzke (Connie), Eleanor McNeil (Jack), Rose Simpson, and Millie Smith (Dwayne). Hilda was predeceased by her younger brother, Sam Gatzke (Eva).

Family would like to thank staff at Allen Gray Continuing Care Centre for their compassionate care.

Hilda’s Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, June 2, 2025, from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm, light lunch to follow at Summerside Beach Club, 1720-88 Street SW, Edmonton, Alberta.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Crohn’s and Colitis Canada.
