As the Bhagavad Gita reminds us:
“For the soul, there is neither birth nor death at any time… It is not slain when the body is slain.”
This passage offers comfort in knowing that Leon’s Coates, spirit has transitioned to eternal peace, continuing its journey beyond the physical world.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Leon Desmond Coates, who departed this life at the age of fifty-two due to a heart attack. Born in Spring Gardens, St. James, Jamaica, Leon immigrated to Ontario as a young child, spending his youth in Bowmanville.

In his adult years, Leon moved to Toronto, where he met the love of his life, Soni Dasmohapatra. Where they created a memorable story at a certain store, and enjoyed watching countless Bollywood movies. Together they built a life filled with laughter, shared dreams, and family. Leon enjoyed food, drinks, and the joy of cooking. Cooking was not only his profession but a testament to his creativity, and his desire to care for others. He supported this passion for cooking, with his love for gardening. Leon and Soni made Edmonton their home in 2016, where Leon continued to share his culinary gifts, hospitality, and warmth with Edmonton.

Leon is survived by his mother Emily Lalonde, his wife Soni, and their three children Kartik, Kirtan, and Niya. He shared a close relationship with his father-in-law Dilip Dasmohapatra. Leon was especially fond of the family dog Coke. He will be missed by his sibling, cousins and extended family in Jamaica, as well as friends whose lives were touched by his kindness, humor, and generosity.

Leon will be remembered for his radiant smile, his love of culture, and his talent as a chef.

A funeral service in honor of Leon’s life will be held on October 30, 2025.

May his soul attain peace and his memory be a blessing to all.
