Ruby Winnifred Cherrington (Caron)
April 18, 1927 – August 3, 2025
Our beautiful Mother, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother, and Friend, Ruby Cherrington was peacefully called home to be with God on Sunday, August 3, 2025, at the remarkable age of 98.
Born on April 18, 1927, in Wetaskiwin, Alberta, Ruby spent much of her childhood on her Granny’s farm, learning the values of hard work, perseverance, and resilience from an early age. She had fond memories of tea time with Granny and riding her horse to and from school.
Ruby’s life was a testament to strength and determination.
She raised seven children—Jackie, Janette, Leona (who passed in 1993), Dennis, Theresa, David, and Douglas—mostly as a single mother. Through hard work and determination, she balanced multiple jobs, including cashier, waitress, bartender, cab driver/dispatcher, and private caregiver, to ensure her family was provided for.
Through every challenge, and by just staying true to herself she created a home full of love, humour, and warmth. She was a woman of incredible wit, quick with a teasing remark or a warm smile.
Ruby had many pets over the years. She loved dogs, birds, animals and nature. She was skilled at crossword puzzles, solitaire, Yahtzee and enjoyed watching her favourite shows on TV. Ruby enjoyed visiting her friends on the main floor after dinner or in the courtyard; but most of all, visiting and sharing time with her family who meant everything to her.
Family and friends fondly remember Ruby’s delicious cakes and pies, and almost every loved one treasures a piece of her beautiful crochet work, made with love, care and skill.
Ruby’s proudest achievement was her family. She delighted in her 10 grandchildren — Michael and Randy, Reaghan, Andrew and Lyndsey, Jaimie, Amanda and Ryan, Joshua, Jonathan — and her 6 great-grandchildren — Tayler, Terran, Kayden, Evelina, Hendrix, Dominick and (soon-to-be-born baby brother). — cherishing every milestone and moment. Her legacy will live on in their hearts and in the countless memories she created with them.
She leaves behind two Sisters, Doris(Dodie) Quinton, Lou (Lou Lou) Brunell and their families. She is now reunited in Heaven with her daughter Leona, her parents, and all the loved ones who have gone before her.
A celebration of Ruby’s life will be held at Pleasantview Seniors Lodge, 2nd floor, on August 23rd from 1-3 pm. In lieu of flowers, a kind word or thought to carry with us would be preferred.
Dodie remembers Ruby as always being her big sister. One she could go to and get advice and who was so much wiser than herself. She had a sharp mind and was a strong and capable woman. She will miss her.
Dear Cherrington/Caron family,
That is such a nice tribute to an amazing lady. I so enjoyed my Auntie Ruby throughout my life time – lots of wonderful memories of her and my cousins. I have a special place in my heart for her and dearly miss her already!
See you soon,
John
