With great sadness in our hearts, we announce the passing of our dear Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother on December 21, 2025 at the Jubilee Nursing Home in Edmonton, Alberta.
Born in Kindersley, Saskatchewan on March 21, 1937 under her first given last name of Kanasevich to Michal and Tytiana (nee Kusznyrik) Kanasevich. Sonia was six years old when her father legally changed their family name to Konash. Only her oldest brother Maurice, who was already in the Navy, decided to keep the Kanasevich name.
She is survived by her daughters Lizette Russell, Diane Dandeneault (George), her Granddaughter Jennifer Dandeneault and Great Granddaughter Emily, and Granddaughters Chantel Dandeneault and Samantha Dandeneault. All who miss her very, very much.
She was preceded by her loving husband Albert Russell in 2022. Her Father, Mother, sister Mary Dennison, her younger brother William (Billy) and wife Lorraine Konash, her oldest brother Maurice and wife Alice Kanasevich, her other brother John and wife Jerry Konash, and then her sister Olga or Decca as she was fondly called (Russell) Mulawka who all preceded her in that order. She was also preceded by two nephews: Dennis Kanasevich and Christopher Starko and her niece Kathy Glogie (nee Mulawka) along with other Aunts and Uncles over the years.
Sonia was very loved by her family, nieces and nephews. She was caring, full of life, loved to joke around and laugh, and had a beautiful smile. Her wish, repeated time and time again, was to be cremated with no funeral or memorial and to be laid to rest beside her parents at the acreage. A private gathering of family and some close friends may take place sometime in the summer of 2026.
Lizette I am so sad that your mom has passed, but she is no longer in pain and in a much happier place. I know how much she meant to you. Sending you lots of love
