With deep love and heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Valerie Patricia McElrea, who passed in Edmonton, Alberta on May 27, 2025, at the age of 69, surrounded by her family.
For the past five years, she faced ALS with the same strength, grit, and determination that defined her life, she didn’t lose to the disease; she kicked its ass in her own way, on her own terms.
Val was a force, fierce, funny, and full of life. She lived with passion and purpose, never backing down from a challenge. Her passion for helping others led her to become a Licensed Practical Nurse, but she later chose to dedicate herself to being a stay-at-home mom to her three children, and foster parent for over 10 years, providing care and love to children with special needs.
She was the beloved wife and partner of 48 years to Patrick McElrea, who stood by her through life’s many adventures. Together, they raised a beautiful family that was the center of her world: her son David McElrea, and her twin daughters Brandi Pacholik and Courtney McElrea. Her legacy lives on in her cherished grandchildren: Ryder, Evan, and Sophie Pacholik; Alex and Madi Peterson; and Rhya Belanger.
Val wore many titles in her life, daughter, sister, aunt, wife, mother, grandma, and friend, but above all, she was a protector, a nurturer, and a safe place for so many. She opened her home and her heart freely, with warmth and wisdom that will never be forgotten.
She loved the open road on a Harley with her husband, the quiet crackle of a campfire, the joy of a ballgame, and the loyal company of her dogs. Her sense of humor lit up every room, her hugs were unforgettable, and her presence made the world feel right.
Valerie was deeply loved and will be forever missed. Her strength, her love, and her spirit live on in every life she touched.
A celebration of Valerie’s life will be held on July 19, 2025. Location to be announced.
In lieu of flowers, Val would have loved for donations to be made to Cystic Fibrosis Canada. https://cysticfibrosis.ca/
Be free, Val. You’ve earned it.
Rest in peace Auntie Val. You were beloved by so many.
Pat, David, Brandi and Courtney, I pray that as time passes, you find peace in the beautiful memories you created together as a family.
Love Michelle and Tark
