In Loving Memory of Patricia Mae (Mohler) Smith
With heavy hearts, we share the passing of our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, Patricia (Patsy Mohler) Smith, who entered eternal rest on March 20, 2025, at Devonshire Care Centre. In her final years, Pat faced a battle with dementia exhibiting the same quiet courage, faith and grace that defined her life, reminding us all that despite her failing memory, love endured above all else.
She leaves behind her devoted husband Austin, children Jackie, Susanne (Robert), Michael, and her cherished grandsons, Cameron, Zachary (Rebecca), Joshua, as well as extended family and numerous friends. Pat was predeceased by her parents Clement Francis and Nellie Mae, her brother Dennis, sister Shirley and her husband Pat MacArthur, and son-in-law, Ralph Wilson.
Born on January 9, 1937, she was raised on the Mohler farm just east of Camrose. Pat benefited from her farming background where she learned the values of hard work, cooking and gardening skills and an appreciation for the simple things that truly matter. She was a woman of indomitable strength, matched only by her razor-sharp wit and enjoyment of a well told story. Generous to a fault, while giving and helping her family and friends, she genuinely loved people – particularly those with common sense, honesty, and humility.
Following high school and a teaching certificate earned at the University of Alberta, Pat taught school at Camrose, Devon and Edmonton. On July 19, 1958, Pat married her high school love, Austin, beginning a partnership that would endure nearly 67 years, persevering through life’s many ups and downs. Together they raised their three children in the community of Lansdowne where they developed an appreciation for close neighbours and lasting friendships. Pat was a stalwart volunteer, teaching figure skating, raising money at bingos and casinos, and hosting her friends for afternoons of bridge.
Pat was the kind of wife and mother who was true to her beliefs and values, rooted in her faith and her strong Catholic upbringing. She was loving, kind, generous, fiercely protective and she was the heartbeat of our family—the one who remembered every birthday, showed up with soup when you were sick, and made holidays feel like magic, always.
While we grieve her passing, we take comfort in knowing her suffering is over, and she is now in the presence of her Lord. Her legacy of faith, love, and laughter will live on in all of us and we will miss her deeply, remember her fondly, and carry her with us always.
Our family is deeply grateful to the dedicated caregivers at Rutherford Heights Retirement Residence and Devonshire Seniors Centre, whose kindness, compassion, and gentle presence brought comfort and dignity to Pat in her final years.
A funeral mass will be held at St. Thomas More Catholic Parish, 210 Haddow Close, Edmonton, AB, on Tuesday, April 8, 2025, at 1:00 PM. A private family interment will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Canada or the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
“Well done, good and faithful servant… Enter into the joy of your Lord.” — Matthew 25:23
