Family and friends announce, with sadness, the passing of Shirley McCuaig on March 24, 2026.
A loving partner, friend, daughter, sibling, coworker, and mentor. Her joy of adventure and upbeat energy, paired with a calm of not letting things bother her, was a joy and positive energy to all of those lucky enough to be in her presence.
A memorial service will be held at the SSUC Church 10740-119 Ave on Saturday, April 25 at 11 AM. A Celebration of Life hosted by friends will be planned in the coming months.

Shirley was an awesome teammate, excited to help in every way she could, even up to her last few weeks with us. She loved to share her knowledge and cheerfully guided us whenever we needed it, as well as producing top-notch work herself. Numerous project sites, large and small, in the North and elsewhere, benefited from Shirley’s mapping skills. Shirley and I co-wrote/produced a few papers and posters over the years, and we had a fun and memorable online poster session for GeoVirtual 2020 during COVID times. We couldn’t help but agree that our poster for Fort McPherson was the most accessible and interesting of all the posters presented, since it was the only one that received any questions! Shirley had many interests besides her expertise in the geosciences, including salsa dancing lessons when we first met way back in 2011. Whenever I think of Shirley, I’ll forever think of maps and salsa. Shirley, we’ll miss you! To Shirley’s loved ones, we wish you strength and our heartfelt condolences.
